What are Signs & Symptoms of an umbilical hernia?
Umbilical hernia can cause:
- A soft bulge or swelling near the belly button.
- The bulge may become more noticeable when crying, coughing, lifting, or straining.
- Pain or tenderness in the area (especially in adults).
- In rare cases, the hernia can get stuck (incarcerated) or the blood supply can be cut off (strangulated), which is an emergency.
How is an umbilical hernia diagnosed?
At Sonoran Surgical, Dr. Rohit Sahai diagnoses umbilical hernia with:
- Medical history & physical exam — checking for a bulge near the belly button, especially when standing or straining.
- Imaging tests (ultrasound or CT scan) may be ordered if the hernia is hard to see or if complications are suspected.
How is an umbilical hernia treated?
Treatment depends on age and symptoms:
- Children: Many umbilical hernias close naturally by age 3–4. Surgery may be needed if the hernia is large, painful, or does not close on its own.
- Adults: Umbilical hernias usually require surgery since they rarely heal on their own.
- Open repair: A small cut near the belly button, pushing the tissue back in and repairing the muscle wall (sometimes with mesh for larger hernias).
- Laparoscopic/Robotic repair: Small incisions with a camera; mesh is often used for reinforcement. Dr Rohit Sahai specializes in robotic hernia repair.
- Emergency surgery: Needed if the hernia becomes trapped or strangulated to prevent serious complications.
