Diagnosis

Medical history and physical exam, checking for lumps, changes in skin, or nipple discharge
Imaging studies such as mammogram, ultrasound, or MRI
Biopsy if there is concern for cancer or other abnormal growths

Treatment

Treatment depends on the reason for surgery:

Cancer-related surgery: lumpectomy or mastectomy, often combined with reconstruction
Benign breast conditions: removal of cysts, fibroadenomas, or other noncancerous growths
