What are skin bumps/lumps?

Skin bumps and lumps are common growths or swellings on or under the skin. They may be harmless or a sign of an underlying condition. Causes can include blocked oil glands, infections, cysts, fatty growths, or even tumors. Most are not serious, but some require medical attention.

Skin Bumps/Lumps Q&A

Signs & Symptoms

Skin bumps and lumps can appear in many ways:

  • Small or large swelling under the skin
  • Soft, firm, or hard texture
  • Painless or tender to the touch
  • Redness, warmth, or drainage if infected
  • Steady growth over time

Diagnosis

At Sonoran Surgical, Dr. Sahai diagnoses skin bumps and lumps with:

  • Medical history and physical exam, checking size, location, and characteristics of the lump
  • Imaging studies such as ultrasound if needed to see what is inside the lump
  • Biopsy or removal of the lump for lab testing if there is concern for infection or cancer

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause of the bump:

  • Observation if the lump is small, painless, and harmless
  • Antibiotics if it is due to infection
  • Minor office procedure to drain or remove a cyst or abscess
  • Surgical removal of larger or concerning lumps such as lipomas, cysts, or suspicious growths

If you notice a new lump, a lump that is painful, or one that changes in size, shape, or color, contact Sonoran Surgical to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Rohit Sahai.
