What are the Signs & Symptoms of an Incisional Hernia?
Incisional hernia can cause:
- A noticeable bulge near or under a surgical scar.
- The bulge may get bigger when standing, coughing, or lifting.
- Discomfort or pain at the hernia site.
- In severe cases, the hernia may become trapped (incarcerated) or cut off from blood supply (strangulated), which is an emergency.
How is it Diagnosised?
At Sonoran Surgical, Dr. Rohit Sahai diagnoses incisional hernia with:
- Medical history and physical exam, checking for bulges at or near prior surgical scars.
- Imaging tests such as ultrasound or CT scan if the hernia is difficult to see or complications are suspected.
How is an Incisional Hernia Treated?
Treatment usually requires surgery because incisional hernias do not heal on their own.
- Open repair: The hernia is fixed through a cut over the scar, the tissue is pushed back inside, and the abdominal wall is reinforced, often with mesh.
- Robotic Surgical Repair/Laparoscopic repair: Several small incisions are used with a camera to repair the hernia from the inside, usually with mesh. Dr Rohit Sahai specialized in robotic hernia repair.
- Emergency surgery: Needed if the hernia becomes incarcerated or strangulated to prevent serious complications.
